Chapter 7 is where your assets that aren't exempt can be liquidated to pay your creditors and in return most if not all of your debts are vaporized. If you don't have assets worth much then typically you don't lose anything. Even if you do have to surrender an asset so that it can be liquidated, it's usually worth it to get rid of thousands of dollars worth of debt. You may even be allowed to keep big ticket items like your house and/or car if you don't have too much equity in them.
